WASNT WISNT
Playbackers is a trio of electroacoustic improvisers from Franklin County, MA who work with recording and playback technology as their instruments. Current membership consists of Adam Kohl (ARKM Foam, Bang! Bros, Peace, Loving) on cassette players, Donny Shaw (Gloyd, Carbus, Fat Worm of Error) on reel to reel tape machine, and Stella Silbert (Sweetness the point of song, Beige) on turntable. Former members include Neil Cloaca Young. The group’s debut tape, Playbackers Record, was released on Tripticks Tapes in March 2023.
Webb Crawford is an improviser, woodworker and instrument-builder. They like playing free-improvised music, Piedmont-style fingerpicking, and percussive/noisy stuff. They have built stringed instruments ranging from electric guitars, basses and mandolins to modern reconstructions of historical instruments and instruments made from recycled materials or found objects. They apprenticed with Mamie Minch & Chloe Swantner at the Brooklyn Lutherie, and built electric guitars and basses at Subway Guitars in Berkeley, CA. In 2017, they worked with the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art to restore the instruments of Gunnar Schonbeck as part of a playable interactive exhibit.
Bee Mask is ‘bee’ as in ‘collective labor’, not ‘bee’ as in ‘eusocial insect’. The long running project of the incomparable Chris Madak.
WASNT WISNT is the on-and-off project of members of Philly bands A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Fantastic Imagination, and others. WASNT WISNT takes experimental collaboration to a new level with their genre-defying sounds.
